How we work

MAA uses its five key pillars to implement its programs in partnership with others:

Engaging in leadership development of affected communities

With partners we increase the skills of emerging leaders among women, youth and indigenous communities so that they can enhance collective action and movement building. The aim is to build a new cadre of next generation leaders that can advocate for transformative development. Our intention also is to build a new cadre of leaders who will be inspiring movements needed to secure a safe and healthy environment for their communities.

Building Partnership infrastructure

With partners we provide general support to community-based institutions in order to: facilitate networking among communities; share knowledge and experiences to strengthen movements; and engage diverse frontline communities. The aim is to build a solid community-led infrastructure that can influence policy decisions and advance the resilience of the target constituents.

Improving Access to Information

With partners, we will improve access to valuable information so that marginalized communities and their segments (traditional institutions, youth and women) better understand how megatrends such as climate change, technology etc., impact their livelihoods as well as their environment, cultural traditions and spiritual practices. The aim is to mobilize communities to secure access to information and resources to build their resilience and adaptive capacity.

Nurturing advocacy

With partners, we build and nurture the advocacy skills of our target constituent local communities particularly the youth and women to secure their greater participation in decision-making at the local and national levels. We aim to promote, support, and foster greater leadership in transparency and accountability in resource acquisition, distribution and use. The aim is to enable communities to take greater control over decisions that affect their lives. Thus we help overlooked people and communities to generate and use evidence that ensures their voices are heard and can hold their decision-makers responsive to their entitlements and services.

Encouraging local solutions, embedded with modern technology

With partners, we support community-driven initiatives, resilience and development approaches that are geared towards sustainability. The aim is to strengthen the ability of marginalized sectors of community to claim and advance their rights to a safe, clean and healthy environment.
